Beyond St Jude's

What happens next for our graduates?

The School of St Jude is a pioneering leader in charitable education within Africa. St Jude’s provides free, quality education to 1,800 bright primary and secondary students who come from considerably poor backgrounds.

But, the support doesn’t stop there... Beyond St Jude’s (BSJ) is an optional program that enables St Jude’s secondary graduates to give back to their communities as volunteers during a Community Service placement. They then go on to access higher education, supported by our sponsors and donors.

Community Service

During their Community Service, volunteers personify the school’s vision by voluntarily assisting in government schools, sharing the gifts of their education, or in various placements throughout St Jude’s.

Our Community Service volunteers teach more than 20,000 government school students each year, who otherwise wouldn’t have teachers for their core subjects like mathematics and science.

Higher education

Those who successfully complete their Community Service placement may then be eligible to receive a College or Tertiary scholarship to pursue their first higher education qualification; enabling them to become the future professionals that their country needs.

We are currently supporting 292 scholars through higher education.

An alternative pathway

In 2020, the BSJ team established the Alternative Pathways Program (APP) with hopes to give highly motivated students an accelerated route to a career. Instead of the usual A Level pathway, Form 4 (O Level) graduates are supported to complete a certificate or diploma at college.

In Tanzania, the first four years of secondary school are called Ordinary Level (O Level) studies;
from Form 1 to Form 4 and the final two years of secondary school are called Advanced Level (A Level); Form 5 and 6.

Like our longstanding Beyond St Jude’s Program for Form 6 graduates, the APP consists of two components; first, a Community Service Semester (CSS) and then a College Program.
Our BSJ and Academic teams have carefully selected educational institutions and courses within Tanzania that will provide quality education for our BSJ College scholars, ensuring that support for their education continues to have maximum impact. We have six graduates currently participating in the APP.

Ultimately, our APP enables us to expand and enhance our core mission: fighting poverty through education and nurturing Tanzania’s future leaders on whichever path they may choose.
